Tungiasis is an endemic dermatological parasitic zoonosis in Latin America, caused by the sand flea Tunga spp. (Siphonaptera, Tungidae), which promotes intense discomfort, swelling, erythema, itching, pain, secondary bacterial infection, cellulitis and necrosis. Sarolaner has been used to control different ectoparasites, but there is no record of its use for the treatment of tungiasis in dogs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of sarolaner for the treatment dogs naturally infested by Tunga spp. kept in the same infested environment. Three of four animals were medicated with sarolaner orally with a single dose of 2 mg/kg, as recommended by the manufacturer, and one animal remained without medication. After 24 hours, the fleas from all four dogs were mechanically removed. The animals were reevaluated on days +15 and +30 to assess possible reinfestation. The medicated animals remained free of fleas, while the untreated animal had fleas on the days previously defined for reevaluation. We can thus conclude that the use of sarolaner is an effective choice for tungiasis treatment.


Tungíase é uma zoonose parasitária dermatológica endêmica na América Latina, causada pela pulga da areia Tunga spp. (Siphonaptera, Tungidae), que promove intenso desconforto, edema, eritema, prurido, dor, infecção bacteriana secundária, celulite e necrose. Sarolaner tem sido utilizado no controle de diversos ectoparasitas, mas não existem registros de seu uso no tratamento de tungíase em cães. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a eficácia do sarolaner no tratamento de cães naturalmente infestados por Tunga spp. mantidos no mesmo ambiente infestado. Três dos quatro animais foram medicados com sarolaner por via oral em dose única de 2 mg/kg, conforme recomendação do fabricante, e um animal permaneceu sem medicação. Após 24 horas, as pulgas dos quatro cães foram removidas mecanicamente. Os animais foram reavaliados nos dias +15 e +30 para avaliar uma possível reinfestação. Os animais medicados permaneceram livres de pulgas, enquanto o animal não tratado apresentou pulgas nos dias previamente definidos para reavaliação. Podemos assim concluir que o uso do sarolaner é uma escolha eficaz para o tratamento da tungíase.

Platynosomum illiciens, a trematode parasite known for its intricate life cycle, predominantly infests the liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts of domestic cats. In this study, we examined feline fecal samples from a cat sanctuary in Metropolitan Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, aiming to determine whether, even in such environments, cats retain their atavistic hunting habits, as evidenced by the presence of P. illiciens in fecal samples. The infection diagnosis utilized centrifugal sedimentation in the formalin-ethyl acetate test. Out of 72 fecal samples collected from various cats, four tested positive for P. illiciens eggs. This study serves as a reminder that even in environments where they are well-fed, cats exhibit predatory behavior, engaging in hunting and consuming prey, thus exposing themselves to parasites. It emphasizes the importance of veterinarians and cat caretakers being cognizant of the widespread presence of P. illiciens in Brazil and considering it in the differential diagnosis for cats presenting with liver or gallbladder issues. In conclusion, our findings underscore that the ancestral instinct for hunting and predation, preserved in domestic cats, persists despite fulfilling their nutritional needs.


Platynosomum illiciens, um parasito trematódeo conhecido por seu ciclo de vida complexo, infesta predominantemente o fígado, a vesícula biliar e os ductos biliares de gatos domésticos. Neste estudo, examinamos amostras fecais de felinos de um santuário de gatos na região metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, com o objetivo de determinar se, mesmo nesses ambientes, os gatos mantêm seus hábitos de caça, evidenciado pela presença de P. illiciens em amostras fecais. O diagnóstico da infecção foi realizado por sedimentação centrífuga no teste de formalina-acetato de etila. Foram obtidas 72 amostras fecais de diferentes gatos e quatro testaram positivo para ovos de P. illiciens. Este estudo é um lembrete de que os gatos terão comportamento predatório, caçando e consumindo presas mesmo quando bem alimentados, ficando expostos ao parasito. Veterinários e cuidadores de gatos devem estar atentos à ampla presença de P. illiciens no Brasil e considerá-la no diagnóstico diferencial de gatos com problemas de fígado ou vesícula biliar. Concluindo, nossos resultados mostram que o instinto atávico dos gatos que se mantiveram conservados durante a domesticação não pode ser anulado quando as necessidades nutricionais dos gatos são satisfeitas.

The number of guinea pigs is increasing as pet and their domestication necessitates the study of their pathology and emerging diseases. This study aimed to evaluate guinea pigs' capacity to be infested by Ctenocephalides felis felis fleas, as it is a common parasite among pets that causes irritation, stress, and transmission of other pathogens. Seventeen guinea pigs were infested with C. felis felis. After 48 hours, the animals were combed, and the number of fleas was determined. Guinea pigs had a very low recovery (average of 5%), leading us to conclude that they are not good hosts for this species, despite some literature citing it as an accidental host if infested along with dogs or cats.


Os porquinhos-da-índia como animal de estimação têm aumentado cada vez mais, e, sua domesticação trouxe a necessidade de estudos sobre suas patologias e doenças emergentes. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a capacidade de infestação dos porquinhos-da-índia pela pulga Ctenocephalides felis felis, ectoparasita comum entre os animais domésticos que causa irritação, estresse e transmissão de outros patógenos. Dezessete animais foram infestados com C. felis felis. Após 48 horas, os animais foram penteados e o número de pulgas determinado. Os porquinhos-da-índia tiveram uma recuperação muito baixa (média de 5%), levando-nos a concluir que estes não são bons hospedeiros para essa espécie de pulga, apesar de algumas literaturas os citarem como hospedeiro acidental se conviverem juntamente com cães ou gatos infestados.

The objectives of this work were to investigate the occurrence of parasites in feces of cats, compare different coproparasitological techniques for their diagnosis and determine associations with parasitism. The samples were processed using three different coproparasitological techniques: centrifugal flotation in sucrose, centrifugal flotation in ZnSO4 and simple sedimentation. The parasitic association between parasitism and variables such as age, sex and fecal consistency was performed using the chi-square test or the G test with a significance level of 5%. A total of 237 samples were analyzed, of which 93 (39.2%) were positive, being Ancylostoma spp. (17.3%), Giardia intestinalis (12.2%), Platynosomum illiciens (8.0%), Cystoisospora spp. (6.3%), Toxoplasma gondii/ Hammondia hammondi (3.4%), Diphyllobothriidae (2.1%), Toxocara spp. (1.7%), Dipylidium caninum (1.3%) and Mesocestoides spp. (0.8%). In the parasitism association analysis, it was possible to verify a statistical difference in the age category for Cystoisospora spp. (p=0.001) observing a strong relationship between parasitism and young animals, the association with sex proved to be important for P. illiciens (p<0.001) with a higher frequency of parasitized females and fecal consistency revealed to be related to the parasites G. intestinalis (p=0.007) and P. illiciens (p=0.033) showing a higher number of positive animals for these parasites with normal fecal consistency. In conclusion, we observed a higher occurrence of Ancylostoma spp. and G. intestinalis in fecal samples from domestic cats received in routine diagnoses and the presence of other parasites with zoonotic potential, as well as the relationship of these diagnosed parasites with the categories sex, age and fecal consistency.

This study aimed to evaluate the use of different adhesive substances in an method to monitor the development of C. felis felis eggs. Three adhesive substances were selected: cyanoacrylate, stick glue, and liquid silicone. The eggs were obtained from a laboratory colony and placed on a thin layer of adhesive substance on the lid of a Petri dish to prevent contact with the larval growth substrate. One hundred eggs were used for each adhesive substance. The development of the eggs was monitored for three consecutive days, during which larval hatching and egg characteristics were observed. Of the 100 eggs incubated for each adhesive substance, 64, 51, and 76 larvae hatched and survived from the stick glue, cyanoacrylate, and liquid silicone plates, respectively. After 30 days of incubation, 59, 45, and 68 hatched adults were observed, respectively, in these groups. The mean hatching of larvae and adults between the liquid silicone and cyanoacrylate groups differed statistically (p < 0.05). This study demonstrated positive results, and that liquid silicone was the most easily applicable adhesive substance on the plate and interfered less with egg development, therefore having the best larval recovery compared to incubated eggs compared to the other substances.

Amblyomma rotundatum is a tick species commonly found on reptiles and amphibians. In Brazil, investigations of this ectoparasite have indicated its distribution across all Brazilian biomes, although it is concentrated in certain locations. In this context, the objective of the present study was to describe a case of parasitism by A. rotundatum in a red-footed tortoise (Chelonoidis carbonarius) in the state of Rio de Janeiro. A female red-footed tortoise (C. carbonarius), seized by the environmental police, was parasitized by a tick in the left periocular region. The tick was manually removed, preserved in 70º GL ethanol, and sent for identification at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ). Based on the morphological evaluation Dantas-Torres et al. (2019), Barros-Battesti et al. (2006) and Lampo et al. (1997), a diagnosis of a female specimen of A. rotundatum was made. In conclusion, this study reports the first case of A. rotundatum parasitizing C. carbonarius in the state of Rio de Janeiro, highlighting the presence of periocular blepharitis associated with this parasitism.


Amblyomma rotundatum é uma espécie de carrapato comumente encontrada em répteis e anfíbios. No Brasil, as investigações desse ectoparasito indicam sua distribuição em todos os biomas brasileiros, embora concentrado em algumas localidades. Nesse contexto, o objetivo do presente estudo foi descrever um caso de parasitismo por A. rotundatum em jabuti-piranga (Chelonoidis carbonarius) no estado do Rio de Janeiro. Uma fêmea de jabuti-piranga (C. carbonarius), apreendida pela Polícia Ambiental, estava parasitada por carrapato na região periocular esquerda. O carrapato foi removido manualmente, preservado em etanol 70º GL e encaminhado para identificação na Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ). Com base na avaliação morfológica Dantas-Torres et al. (2019), Barros-Battesti et al. (2006) e Lampo et al. (1997), foi feito o diagnóstico de um espécime fêmea de A. rotundatum. Em conclusão, este estudo relata o primeiro caso de A. rotundatum parasitando C. carbonarius no estado do Rio de Janeiro, destacando a presença de blefarite periocular associada a este parasitismo.

Wild cats play an important role as top predators in the food chain and act as ecosystem regulators. However, in recent decades, many studies have demonstrated the potential effects of parasitic diseases on wild carnivore populations, including cats. This study reports on the endoparasites found in an injured and rescued specimen of Leopardus pardalis in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Fecal samples were collected and processed using five coproparasitological techniques: a simple flotation centrifugation, a zinc sulfate flotation centrifugation, a formalin-ether sedimentation centrifugation, a conical centrifuge tube technique, and a modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining technique for fecal smears. Helminth eggs belonging to the families Trichuridae and Diphyllobothriidae and the genus Toxocara were found in both sedimentation flotation techniques. Protozoan oocysts belonging to the genus Cryptosporidium were identified by modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining. These findings show that ocelots can harbor potentially zoonotic and pathogenic endoparasites. Further studies on the helminths and protofauna of these animals are necessary.


Os felinos selvagens desempenham um papel importante como predadores de topo na cadeia alimentar e atuam como reguladores do ecossistema. No entanto, nas últimas décadas, muitos estudos demonstraram os efeitos potenciais de doenças parasitárias em populações de carnívoros selvagens, incluindo gatos. Este estudo relata os endoparasitos encontrados em um espécime ferido e resgatado de Leopardus pardalis no estado do Rio de Janeiro. Amostras fecais foram coletadas e processadas usando cinco técnicas coproparasitológicas: uma centrifugação por flotação simples, uma centrifugação por flotação com sulfato de zinco, uma centrifugação por sedimentação com éter de formalina, uma técnica de tubo de centrífuga cônica e uma técnica modificada de coloração de Ziehl-Neelsen para esfregaços fecais. Ovos de helmintos pertencentes às famílias Trichuridae e Diphyllobothriidae e ao gênero Toxocara foram encontrados em ambas as técnicas de flotação por sedimentação. Oocistos de protozoários pertencentes ao gênero Cryptosporidium foram identificados pela coloração de Ziehl-Neelsen modificada. Esses achados mostram que jaguatiricas podem abrigar endoparasitas potencialmente zoonóticos e patogênicos. Mais estudos sobre os helmintos e a protofauna desses animais são necessários.

Eight hundred eggs of C. felis felis from a flea maintenance colony were used. Different diets were formulated, in which the main substrates were meat flour, powdered milk, sugar, lyophilized bovine blood, tick metabolites and lyophilized egg. The flea eggs were placed in test tubes (10 per tube) and approximately 2 g of the diet to be tested was added to each tube. There were 10 replicates for each substrate. After 28 days, each tube was evaluated individually for the presence of pupae and emerged adults. The following percentages of the larvae completed the cycle to the adult stage: 67% in diets containing tick metabolites; 55%, meat flour; 39%, dehydrated bovine blood; 14%, powdered milk; and less than 1% in diets containing sugar, lyophilized bovine blood, lyophilized egg or wheat bran. It was concluded that among the diets tested, the one constituted by tick metabolites as the substrate was shown to be the most satisfactory for maintaining a laboratory colony of C. felis felis, followed by the one containing meat flour.

Essential oils (EOs) are considered a new class of ecological products aimed at the control of insects for industrial and domestic use; however, there still is a lack of studies involving the control of fleas. Ctenocephalides felis felis, the most observed parasite in dogs and cats, is associated with several diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro activity, the establishment of LC50 and toxicity of EOs from Alpinia zerumbet (Pers.) B. L. Burtt & R. M. Sm, Cinnamomum spp., Laurus nobilis L., Mentha spicata L., Ocimum gratissimum L. and Cymbopogon nardus (L.) Rendle against immature stages and adults of C. felis felis. Bioassay results suggest that the method of evaluation was able to perform a pre-screening of the activity of several EOs, including the discriminatory evaluation of flea stages by their LC50. Ocimum gratissimum EO was the most effective in the in vitro assays against all flea stages, presenting adulticide (LC50 = 5.85 µg cm-2), ovicidal (LC50 = 1.79 µg cm-2) and larvicidal (LC50 = 1.21 µg cm-2) mortality at low doses. It also presented an excellent profile in a toxicological eukaryotic model. These findings may support studies involving the development of non-toxic products for the control of fleas in dogs and cats.

Resumo Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a eficiência de diferentes substratos no desenvolvimento larval de Ctenocephalides felis felis durante seu ciclo biológico. Foram utilizados 800 ovos de C. felis felis, oriundos de colônia de manutenção de pulgas. Diferentes dietas foram formuladas, contendo como substratos principais a farinha de carne, leite em pó, açúcar, sangue bovino liofilizado, metabólitos de carrapato e ovo liofilizado. Foram distribuídos 10 ovos por tubo de ensaio, aos quais foram acrescidos as dietas a serem testadas, realizando-se10 repetições para cada substrato. Após 28 dias, cada tubo foi avaliado individualmente pela presença de pupas e adultos emergidos. Nas dietas que continham metabólitos de carrapato, 67% das larvas completaram o ciclo até a fase adulta; 55% nas que continham farinha de carne; 39% contendo sangue bovino desidratado; 14% com leite em pó, e menos de 1% em dietas contendo açúcar, sangue bovino liofilizado, ovo liofilizado e farelo de trigo. Conclui-se que, entre as dietas testadas, a constituída por metabólitos de carrapato como substrato, mostrou-se a mais satisfatória para a manutenção de colônia laboratorial de C.felis felis, seguida da que continha farinha de carne.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a single dose of oral afoxolaner in controlling fleas in cats. Fourteen cats were used. The cats were given identification numbers, housed individually, artificially infested with Ctenocephalides felis felis, and treated (or not) with afoxolaner. Were divided into a treatment group and a control group (n = 7/group), on the basis of the fleas count hours after an infestation applied on Day (one-by-one allocation after ordering by count). At the start of the experimental protocol (designated day 0), the treated group received afoxolaner in a single dose of 2.5 mg/kg and the control group animals received a placebo. All animals were infested with 100 C. felis felis fleas two days before day 0, as well as on days 5, 12, 19, 26, 33, 40, 47, 54, and 63, parasite loads being evaluated at 48 h after each infestation. The efficacy of afoxolaner was 100% on day 2 and remained above 98% until day 42, decreasing to 95.3% by day 63. The findings confirm that a single dose of oral afoxolaner was effective in controlling C. felis felis in cats, and there were no observed adverse events.


Resumo O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a eficácia de uma dose única de afoxolaner oral no controle de pulgas em gatos. Foram utilizados 14 gatos. Os animais foram identificados, alojados individualmente, infestados artificialmente com C. felis felis e tratados (ou não) com afoxolaner. Foram divididos em um grupo de tratamento e um grupo controle (n = 7/ grupo), com base na contagem de pulgas, horas após a infestação aplicada no dia (alocação de um por um após o período por contagem). No início do protocolo experimental (dia 0), o grupo tratado recebeu afoxolaner em dose inicial de 2,5 mg / kg e os animais do grupo controle receberam um placebo. Todos os animais foram infestados com 100 pulgas C. felis felis dois dias antes do dia 0, assim como nos dias 5, 12, 19, 26, 33, 40, 47, 54 e 63, sendo avaliadas as cargas parasitárias às 48 h após cada infestação. A eficácia do afoxolaner foi de 100% no dia 2 e permaneceu acima de 98% até o dia 42, diminuindo para 95,3% no dia 63. Os resultados confirmam que uma dose única de afoxolaner oral foi eficaz no controle de C. felis felis em gatos, e não houve eventos adversos observados.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the larval expulsion, larvicidal effect, retention rate of dead larvae and overall efficacy of sarolaner on the treatment of myiasis caused by New World screwworm Cochliomyia hominivorax in naturally infested dogs. Eight Beagle dogs received a single dose of saroalner 40 mg, with dosage ranging from 2.7 mg/kg to 3.7 mg/kg. Evaluations occurred every 15 min in the first hour, every hour for up to 6 h, and after 24 h of treatment. At 24 h post-treatment, total wound cleaning was performed, including removal and counting of remaining live and dead larvae. The animals received antibiotic, analgesic and wound cleaning support until complete wound healing. The average expulsion of the larvae was 50.9 % occurring mainly after 4 h of treatment. The larvicidal effect was 70.6 % at 6 h after treatment and 100 % at 24 h. The mean retention rate of dead larvae of sarolaner was 33.9 %, The overall efficacy was 100 %, thus making sarolaner an excellent treatment option in myiasis caused by C. hominivorax larvae in dogs.

All animals were infested with 100 C. felis felis fleas two days before day 0, as well as on days 5, 12, 19, 26, 33, 40, 47, 54, and 63, parasite loads being evaluated at 48 h after each infestation. The efficacy of afoxolaner was 100% on day 2 and remained above 98% until day 42, decreasing to 95.3% by day 63. The findings confirm that a single dose of oral afoxolaner was effective in controlling C. felis felis in cats, and there were no observed adverse events.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of an insecticidal product in rabbits that combines the neonicotinoid dinotefuran with the pyrethroid permethrin plus the insect growth regulator pyriproxyfen. Adult New Zealand rabbits (n = 12) were infested with Ctenocephalides felis felis (50 males and 50 females per rabbit) at days -7, -2, +5, +12 and +19. The control group (n = 6) received no treatment and the treated group (n = 6) received the commercial formulation, indicated for use in dogs, which was applied topically on day 0. The animals were mechanically evaluated with combs (comb test), to assess pulicidal efficacy, on days -5, +2, +7, +14 and +21. All flea removals and counts were performed by region, following the order: head, ears, neck, forelegs, dorsum, abdomen, hind limbs and tail, in order to determine the preferred sites of parasitism by the C. felis felis flea in rabbits. The distribution of fleas prevailed in the head region (about 62%), followed by the neck and back (14 and 11%, respectively). The insecticidal efficacy was calculated using arithmetic means, showing effectiveness of 100% on days +2 and +7 and 82.2% and 81.6%, on days +14 and +21, respectively. Thus the present study has shown the combination to be a viable option in the treatment and control of rabbits infested by C. felis felis.

Afoxolaner is a drug belonging to the isoxazolines' family, and it is recommended for ectoparasite control in dogs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of afoxolaner in the treatment of otodectic mange in naturally infested cats. Sixteen cats were divided into two groups (treated and control). The treated group (n = 8) underwent a single oral presentation of afoxolaner at a dose of 2.5 mg/kg. The control group (n = 8) received no antiparasitic treatment. The detection of mite infestations were performed by video otoscopy before the medication, 48 h after the medication and at weekly intervals up to 35 days after treatment (+7, +14, +21, +28, +35). In the treated group, the animals were negative for the presence of the mite 48 h after the medication and throughout the evaluation period. The control group remained positive throughout the experiment, demonstrating 100% efficacy (p < 0.05) for the treated cats naturally infested with Otodectes cynotis in a single dose over a period of 35 days. The animals were reintroduced into their natural habitat, allowed to regain contact with other cats and then reassessed for possible reinfestation. It was found that afoxolaner was effective in the treatment of otodectic mange the animals presented no adverse reaction to the use of afoxolaner.

O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar através de teste in vivo, a eficácia e o período residual de proteção do fipronil 10% "top spot" em cães infestados com diferentes cargas parasitárias de Ctenocephalides felis felis. Foram utilizados 24 cães da raça Beagle, compondo seis animais por grupo. Os cães foram divididos em quatro grupos. Os cães dos grupos controles I e II não receberam tratamento, enquanto que os cães dos grupos tratados I e II receberam tratamento com formulação de fipronil 10% "top spot". Os cães dos grupos controle I e tratado I foram infestados com 100 pulgas adultas não alimentadas, e os cães dos grupos controle II e tratado II foram infestados com 300 pulgas adultas não alimentadas. As infestações foram realizadas nos dias, -2, +5, +12, +19, +26, +33 e +40 e nos dias +2, +7, +14, +21, +28, +35 e +42 foi realizada retirada mecânica e contagem de pulgas para avaliação. As eficácias pulguicidas, para o grupo tratado I, nos dias +2, +7, +14, +21, +28, +35 e +42, foram respectivamente 99,36%; 99,73%; 99,48%; 99,74%; 99,75%; 95,06% e 67,62%...


The objective of the study was to evaluate through in vivo test, the efficacy and residual period of protection of 10% fipronil "top spot" for dogs with different Ctenocephalides felis felis burdens of infestations. For this, 24 Beagles were used, divided into four groups of six dogs each. The dogs of the control groups I and II were not treated, while the dogs of the treated groups I e II were treated with the formulation of 10% fipronil "top spot". The dogs of the control group I and treated group I were infested with 100 unfed C. felis felis and dogs of group control II and treated II one were infested with 300 unfed C. felis felis each. Infestations were performed on days -2, +5, +12, +19, +26, +33 and +40, and on days +2, +7, +14, +21, +28, +35 and +42 fleas were mechanical removed and counted for evaluation. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the influence of meridic diets composed by blood from different animal species upon the adult emergence of Ctenocephalides felis felis fleas. Six artificial diets containing dried blood of cattle (standard), dogs, rabbit and chicken, combined with sand or sand/wheat bran were prepared. For each diet six samples containing ten C. f. felis eggs were evaluated. After 25 days of incubation, samples were assessed for adult emergence. The number of emerge fleas for diets composed by bovine, canine, rabbit and chicken combined with sand/ wheat bran was approximately eight fleas. Diets composed by bovine and canine combined with sand, this emergence was approximately one flea, for both. It can be concluded that the blood origin do not alter significantly C. f. felis adult emergence rate. Therefore, blood from any available animal species can be used for artificial diet formulation, combined with wheat bran in order to supply any nutritional losses occurred during blood dehydration.

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a influência de dietas merídicas compostas por sangue de diferentes espécies animais sobre a emergência de adultos da pulga Ctenocephalides felis felis. Foram utilizadas seis dietas artificiais contendo areia e sangue desidratado de cão, boi, coelho e galinha, acrescidas ou não com farelo de trigo. Foram realizadas seis repetições contendo dez ovos de C. f. felis para cada dieta. Após 25 dias de incubação, os ovos foram quantificados e avaliados quanto à emergência de adultos. O número de pulgas emergidas para dietas com sangue de boi, cão, coelho e galinha, com areia e farelo de trigo, foi de aproximadamente oito pulgas. Para as dietas contendo apenas sangue de boi ou de cão e areia, essa emergência foi de aproximadamente uma pulga para ambas. Conclui-se que a origem do sangue empregado na elaboração da dieta não interfere significativamente no percentual de emergência de adultos de C. f. felis. Portanto, pode-se optar pela espécie animal disponível para o preparo da dieta artificial, aliada à suplementação com farelo de trigo, para suprir uma eventual perda nutricional decorrente da desidratação do sangue.

The goal of the present study was to evaluate the comparative efficacy of two topical formulations containing 10% fipronil on the control of Ctenocephalides felis felis on cats. The trial was performed at the Laboratory of Experimental Chemotherapy in Veterinary Parasitology from the Department of Animal Parasitology of the Institute of Veterinary of the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro. Eighteen mixed-breed cats were divided in three groups of six animals each. One group remained without treatment (control). The other groups received as treatment the two topical formulations, a commercial reference and the novel one, both containing 10% fipronil. Treated animals received 0.5 mL of product along their cervical region. Cats were infested on days - 2, +5, +12, +19, +26 and +33. Evaluations were made using the "comb test". The first one was undertaken 4 days after the initial infestation (day +2), and others 48 hours after following infestations (days +7, +14, +21, +28 and + 35). Both tested formulations had satisfactory efficacy until day + 35. No differences were observed comparing the efficacy levels between both formulations throughout the experimental period. The novel topical 10% fipronil formulation presented desirable efficacy on the control of C. f. felis on cats.

No presente trabalho, foram avaliadas, comparativamente, duas formulações comerciais tópicas, contendo 10 por cento de fipronil, para o controle da pulga Ctenocephalides felis felis em gatos. O experimento foi realizado no Laboratório de Quimioterapia Experimental em Parasitologia Veterinária do Departamento de Parasitologia Animal, Instituto de Veterinária, da Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro. Foram empregados 18 gatos, sem raça definida, divididos em três grupos de seis. Um grupo permaneceu sem tratamento (controle), e os demais foram medicados com uma formulação referência do mercado veterinário ou com uma nova formulação em teste. Os animais tratados receberam 0,5 mL do produto ao longo da região dorso-cervical e foram infestados nos dias - 2, +5, +12, +19, +26 e +33. A primeira avaliação foi realizada quatro dias após a primeira infestação e, as demais, 48 horas após cada infestação, por meio do comb test. Ambas as formulações testadas foram eficazes até o dia +35 após o tratamento, não havendo diferenças entre seus níveis de eficácia ao longo do período experimental. A nova formulação, contendo fipronil a 10 por cento, apresentou a eficácia desejada no controle de C. f. felis em gatos.
